Arena surfaces

There is no best arena surface. There is a surface that suits what you ride, how often you ride it, how much maintenance you will realistically do and how much you want to spend. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling the one they stock.

Silica sand on its own

The base case, and still a perfectly reasonable choice for a quiet private arena. Good silica sand is angular, which means the grains lock together rather than rolling over each other the way soft building sand does. That angularity is the whole point, and it is why the sand specification matters more than people expect.

On its own, sand moves. It needs watering in summer to hold together and it needs regular levelling, because it migrates to the edges and gets deep on the track. It is the cheapest surface to install and the most demanding to keep good.

Sand and fibre

Adding synthetic fibre to silica sand gives the surface something to bind to. The fibres knit through the sand and hold it together, which reduces migration, cuts down watering and gives a more consistent ride with much less maintenance.

For most private yards this is the sensible default and it is what our standard specification includes. It rides well, it is forgiving of imperfect maintenance and it is not expensive relative to what it fixes.

Wax coated fibre

A waxed surface is sand and fibre where the components are coated in wax. The wax holds moisture in the surface, which means it rides consistently through a dry August and a wet January and needs very little watering.

It is the surface most competition yards choose and it is what we would recommend to anyone jumping regularly or riding through the winter in earnest. It costs meaningfully more to install. It also lasts well and takes far less looking after, so the comparison is not as one sided as the headline price suggests.

The honest caveat: wax is temperature sensitive. In a genuinely hot spell it softens, and in hard frost it firms up. In an English climate that is a manageable characteristic rather than a problem, but it is worth knowing rather than discovering.

Rubber

Shredded rubber mixed into sand adds cushioning and helps the surface hold together. It rides softly, which some horses love and which is harder work for others. It is popular for arenas used mainly for flatwork and for horses that need a kinder surface.

It is not our default recommendation for a jumping arena, where a surface that gives too much on landing is not doing the horse any favours. It also floats, which means it can migrate in heavy rain if the drainage is not right.

No two disciplines ask the same thing

No two disciplines ask exactly the same thing of a surface, and we do not believe they should all be specified the same.

A dressage horse working deep and round through the back wants consistency and a surface that lets it push evenly off both hind legs. A showjumper wants support at take-off and something that will not give way on landing or torque a joint on a turn back to a fence. A young horse learning its job wants confidence underfoot more than performance. Those are different specifications, not different brochures.

So the question we ask first is not which product you would like. It is what you ride, how often, and what you are trying to produce.

What actually decides it

Ask what you ride and how often. A dressage rider schooling five days a week through the winter wants a waxed surface and will get their money back in consistency and in time not spent harrowing. Someone hacking out mostly and using the arena twice a week in summer does not need one.

Then ask honestly how much maintenance you will do. A plain sand surface that is levelled weekly rides better than a waxed surface that is neglected. Most people over estimate this, and the right answer is to buy the surface that suits the maintenance you will actually do rather than the maintenance you intend to do.

Depth, and the mistake that gets made

More surface is not better. A surface laid too deep is exhausting for a horse to work in and is one of the commonest causes of the tendon injuries that get blamed on the arena. Too thin and it is hard, and the sub-base does the work instead.

The right depth depends on the material and on what you ride. It is specified, measured and checked on installation, not poured in until it looks about right.

Watering, dust and the summer question

Every surface except a waxed one needs water in a dry spell. A dry sand and fibre surface loses its bind, rides loose and produces dust, which is unpleasant for you and genuinely bad for a horse's airways over time.

That means either a hose and a couple of hours, a mobile bowser, or an irrigation system installed with the arena. Irrigation is not cheap and it is far cheaper installed at build than retrofitted. If you are on a private water supply or a meter, factor the running cost in as well.

This is the practical argument for wax that gets lost behind the headline price. A waxed surface holds its own moisture and largely removes the job.

How long each lasts

A plain sand surface that is well maintained and topped up will keep going for a long time, because you are effectively replacing it gradually. Sand and fibre typically gives ten to fifteen years before the fibre content has broken down enough to need replacing. A good waxed surface can run longer than that, and it degrades more slowly because the wax protects the components.

Those are ranges, not promises, and the biggest variable in all of them is not the material. It is how much the arena is used and how well it is looked after.

The part of this you cannot read off a datasheet

Everything above is specification. What none of it captures is how far a foot travels before it stops, which is the difference between a horse turning back confidently to a fence and one running through the shoulder. Too much slide and it loses trust. Too little and the leg stops dead while the body keeps going, which is torque straight into the joint.

There is no number for that on any product sheet, and there is no way to arrive at it except from the saddle. It is the main reason we choose a surface from a conversation about what you ride rather than from a catalogue, and the reason we ride the finished arena before calling it done.
